Lightning Policy
General Safety Principle
When thunder roars, go indoors.
All individuals at the facility must take lightning threats seriously and follow staff instructions immediately.
Lightning Safety Planning
All families, coaches, and guests are strongly encouraged to develop a personal lightning safety plan before arriving at the facility. This plan should include:
- Identification of a SAFE, fully enclosed structure that can be reached quickly.
- Understanding that metal sheds, pavilions, tents, dugouts, and any structure not fully enclosed are NOT safe during lightning activity.
- Awareness that a fully enclosed vehicle (car or truck) is an acceptable alternative shelter when buildings are not available.
Parental Expectations During Inclement Weather
Because Florida weather can change rapidly, parents and guardians are encouraged to:
- Remain close to the facility during training sessions when weather conditions are unstable.
- Be prepared to retrieve players immediately if lightning is detected and evacuation procedures are activated.
- Follow all instructions from St. Pete Raiders staff without delay.
Field Evacuation Procedures
The club uses a horn alert system to communicate lightning-related actions:
One horn blast:
Clear the fields immediately. All players, coaches, referees, and spectators must evacuate to a safe, fully enclosed location or vehicle.
Two horn blasts:
All clear. Activities may resume, and individuals may return to the fields.
No one may return to the fields until the official all‑clear signal is given.
Compliance
All participants and visitors are required to comply with this policy. Failure to follow lightning safety procedures may result in suspension of activities or removal from the facility.
Commitment to Safety
The St. Pete Raiders Soccer Club will continue to monitor weather conditions, update safety protocols as needed, and ensure that all staff members are trained to respond appropriately to lightning threats. Protecting our community is our highest priority.

Remember to be respectful to officials, players, and coaches!
